Heard of stinky tofu or rotten tofu? Yes there really is a type of tofu that smells bad. But it is edible and its an acquired taste. The smell of the tofu can be discerned a mile away. It smells rotten. Thats the best description. Get past its smell and it has a mild flavour.
The beancurd is soaked in brine usually made of rancid soy milk, rotten vegetables, herbs and whatever secret ingredients of the maker of the stinky tofu. Marinated and then taken out. then sliced and deep fried.
The result. Its crispy on the outside and spongy inside. However it has a terrible smell.
Its an acquired taste.
